Spanish municipal waste contract updates

In late July 2026, Spanish local authorities continued to shape their waste‑management and related public‑service frameworks.

On 22 July, the Badia del Vallès town council in Catalonia approved a €1 million contract with UTE Deltapunt to complete the first phase of its asbestos‑removal programme, part of a larger €4.4 million regional grant. The same day, the Catalan Public Contracts Tribunal upheld a €262 million, ten‑year cleaning and waste‑collection contract for the city of Lleida, enabling staff expansion, fleet renewal and the introduction of water‑based street cleaning.

Five days later, on 27 July, the City Council of Donostia (San Sebastian) extended its SMATSA waste‑collection contract by three years to 2030, citing the need to develop a new service model that may incorporate RFID‑enabled bins and new billing methods. Meanwhile, officials in Torredembarra prepared to decide whether to municipalise waste‑cleaning services or retain an external provider, with a temporary contract expiring in 2026 and a new long‑term agreement expected before the 2027 municipal elections.
