Spanish towns launch safety raids on electric scooters and sabotage‑hit public bikes

The municipality of Elda in Spain has begun a focused enforcement campaign on electric scooters and other personal mobility vehicles. Local police, coordinated by the City Council’s Safety and Mobility department, are conducting random street checks, issuing fines for unregistered or uninsured scooters, and seizing vehicles that do not meet technical standards. The campaign follows specialist training for officers on the legal requirements for such vehicles.

In the nearby city of Elche, the municipal bike‑share operator BiciElx reported a new wave of vandalism, with brake and gear cables deliberately cut on five bicycles at a station near the Santa Teresa bridge. The sabotage poses a direct safety risk to riders and has prompted a police investigation. The damaged bikes were removed from service for repair, and the operator warned that the incidents, which have been recurring since mid‑2025, could reduce bike availability for daily commuters.
