Spanish towns Oropesa del Mar and Moaña tighten electric scooter and bike fines

The local police in Oropesa del Mar intensified checks on electric scooters after a rise in infractions during June, reporting 23 riders fined and 12 vehicles seized. Authorities reminded users that scooters must be registered with the traffic agency, carry mandatory civil‑liability insurance, and be used only on roads or designated bike lanes. Riding on sidewalks, carrying passengers, using phones or headphones while riding, and driving under the influence are prohibited and can lead to immediate immobilisation.

In the neighbouring town of Moaña, police have moved from an information campaign to active enforcement. From now on, cyclists and scooter riders found on sidewalks or pedestrian paths face a €100 fine, while serious offences such as alcohol or drug‑related driving can attract penalties up to €1,000. The measures aim to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and personal‑mobility‑vehicle users and improve safety in public spaces.

Both municipalities will continue heightened summer patrols in areas with high tourist traffic, urging users to comply with registration, insurance and traffic rules to avoid sanctions.
