Spanish Treasury issues 4,000 million euros in green debt amid market volatility
The Spanish Treasury has successfully issued 4,000 million euros in 20-year syndicated green debt, attracting initial demand exceeding 55,000 million euros. This high demand is viewed by the Ministry of Economy as a sign of market confidence in the Spanish economy. Additionally, the Treasury is scheduled to auction three- and nine-month Treasury bills.
These developments occur amid global debt market volatility. Spanish 10-year bond yields have risen toward 3.8%, reaching levels not seen since late 2023, driven by expectations that central banks may raise interest rates to combat inflation. Despite this, Spanish bonds have remained relatively resilient compared to international turbulence, with the risk premium against Germany holding at 43 basis points.
On a global scale, US 10-year Treasury yields are approaching the 5% threshold, a level that has caused concern regarding the long-term cost of servicing US debt and its impact on the economy. Analysts suggest that while rising yields present investment opportunities, they also increase interest expenses for governments and could tighten financial conditions.
