Spanish wine exports fall 4.3% in 2025 as US and China demand wanes
The Organización Interprofesional del Vino de España (OIVE) reported that Spanish wine exports slipped 4.3 % in value and 2.6 % in volume in 2025, reaching €2.8996 billion and 1.9076 billion litres. Packaged wine suffered the biggest decline, down 6.4 % in value and 7.2 % in volume, while bulk shipments rose 5.6 % in value and 1.2 % in volume.
In the United States, sales of Spanish packaged wine fell 36 % in value and 26.6 % in volume in the first quarter of 2026, to €56.6 million and 12.8 million litres. In China, the same segment dropped 24.9 % in value and 18.8 % in volume, to €7.3 million and 1.9 million litres. Analysts attribute the downturn to weaker global alcohol consumption, higher tariffs and broader geopolitical tensions. Eva Linares of ERA Group said, "It's not only tariffs that explain the situation." OIVE economist Vicente Rubira added that the EU‑China tariff dispute and China's search for cheaper alternatives further strained sales.
Industry experts urge Spanish wineries to diversify risk by targeting new markets, innovating with low‑alcohol or alcohol‑free products, and improving cost efficiency.
