Spanish wine exports fall in Q1 2026 amid sharp US import drop

Spain’s wine export sector recorded a modest rebound in March 2026, with foreign sales reaching €250.4 million, a 0.8% increase over the same month a year earlier. The rise was driven by higher prices per litre, while export volumes fell 5.6% to 158.1 million litres.

Despite March’s improvement, the first quarter remained the weakest since 2020. Overall export revenue slid 7% to €642.5 million and volumes plunged 15.7% to 418.7 million litres. Bulk wine suffered the steepest decline, down 14.6% in value and 23.1% in volume, while DOP and sparkling categories also saw double‑digit drops. By contrast, varietal wines and bag‑in‑box formats posted modest gains.

The United States, Spain’s biggest market by value, reduced its wine purchases by 16.8% (€50.5 million) and 9.3% in volume during the quarter. U.S. overall wine imports fell dramatically, down 38.9% in value (€1.069 billion) and 20.6% in volume, hitting Spanish exporters hard: Spain slipped to fourth place among U.S. packaged‑wine suppliers, with a 35.9% drop in export value to the market.
