Spanish wine exports plunge 21% in volume in first four months of 2026

Spanish wine exports fell sharply in the January‑April 2026 period, with volume down about 20‑21% and value down roughly 9‑10% compared with the same period a year earlier, according to data from the Spanish tax agency and analysis by consultancy Del Rey AWM. Bulk wine shipments recorded the steepest declines, while packaged wines also weakened, with sparkling wines such as Cava losing around 7‑8% in value and 5‑7% in volume. The United States remained the top market for Spanish sparkling wine but saw a near 20% drop in both value and volume. Prices rose overall, with the average export price increasing about 15% year‑on‑year. Some segments, notably bag‑in‑box formats, recorded modest gains, but the sector continues to face a prolonged downturn in international demand.

The downturn was felt across multiple markets: Italy, Ivory Coast, France, Germany, Sweden and the United States posted notable reductions, while smaller increases were noted in Portugal, Japan, Morocco, Canada, South Korea and the Dominican Republic. The overall picture points to a sustained weakness in global wine markets over the past three years.
