Greece seizes over 20 kg cannabis at Evros border and Heraklion airport

Greek drug‑enforcement units intercepted multiple large shipments of raw cannabis in early July 2026.

At the Evros border crossing near the town of Κήποι Έβρου on 21 July, police and customs officers, aided by a detection dog named “Laika”, stopped a foreign driver and discovered ten nylon bags containing a total of 4.37 kg of unprocessed cannabis. The vehicle and a mobile phone were seized and the driver was transferred to the local magistrate.

Two days later, at Heraklion’s Nikos Kazantzakis airport, authorities detained a 22‑year‑old Spanish woman who had arrived by charter flight from Barcelona. Inspectors forced open her sealed suitcase and found two airtight packages holding 19 kg + 100 g of high‑potency “Skunk” cannabis, valued at roughly €80,000. The same day a separate operation at the same airport uncovered a 32‑year‑old foreign woman carrying 19 kg + 100 g of cannabis, also confiscated along with €210 cash and a mobile phone. Both arrests are linked to an international trafficking network, with investigators already identifying a possible coordinator named “Max”.

All suspects have been remanded to the appropriate prosecutorial authorities while investigations continue to map the broader supply chain.
