Sparta Capital acquires majority stake in Girondins de Bordeaux from Gérard Lopez
British investment fund Sparta Capital Management reached an agreement to purchase 67 % of the shares in French football club Girondins de Bordeaux, ending Gérard Lopez’s three‑year ownership. Lopez will retain a 33 % minority stake and may remain co‑president alongside Sparta’s Franck Tuil.
The deal includes a €20 million investment plan over three years, with €6 million to be injected immediately to support the club’s revival. Bordeaux, currently competing in National 1 after successive relegations, hopes the new ownership will fund a return to higher divisions.
Lopez, who rescued the club from bankruptcy in 2021, said the sale provides a “stable foundation” for the future, while Sparta Capital faces the challenge of rebuilding a financially strained institution and re‑engaging a disillusioned supporter base.
