SPE trains journalists in energy reporting at Nigeria masterclass

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council, chaired by Engr. Francis Nwaochei, organized an executive masterclass on energy journalism in Lagos in partnership with Sequest Upstream Company Ltd. The event, titled “Engineering the Narrative: Why Technical Knowledge Matters in Energy Journalism,” aimed to improve factual, unbiased reporting on Nigeria’s rapidly evolving energy sector.

Speakers included former SPE Council Chairman Engr. Amina Danmadami, AA Holdings/NNPC board member Austin Avuru, Chevron Nigeria’s Christopher Eleagu, Dr. Layi Fatona of Western & Renaissance Africa Energy Company, and oil‑and‑gas expert Chike Nwosu. Participants were urged to ask precise questions, verify data, and distinguish between production figures, reserve estimates, licence awards and other industry metrics, emphasizing the role of accurate journalism in shaping public perception, investor confidence and policy discussions.

The masterclass covered topics such as gas development, energy security, carbon management, digital technologies, local content, financing, regulatory reforms and the transition to a lower‑carbon future, highlighting the need for deeper technical understanding in media coverage of the sector.
