Nigeria energy journalism training

In late July 2026, Chevron Nigeria partnered with the Nigeria Union of Journalists to run a workshop in Abuja that taught journalists how to use artificial intelligence and data‑driven methods for energy reporting. The training emphasized AI’s potential to spot misinformation and deepfakes while stressing the need for editorial judgment and data accuracy.

A few days later, on 1 August 2026, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council held an executive masterclass in Lagos, co‑hosted with Sequest Upstream Company Ltd. The session, “Engineering the Narrative: Why Technical Knowledge Matters in Energy Journalism,” focused on improving factual, unbiased coverage by teaching participants how to verify production figures, reserve estimates, licence awards and other industry metrics. Speakers from SPE, NNPC, Chevron and other energy firms highlighted topics such as gas development, carbon management, digital technologies and the transition to a lower‑carbon future.

Together, the two events illustrate a coordinated effort by industry bodies and corporations to boost the technical capacity of Nigerian journalists covering the energy sector, combining AI tools with deeper technical understanding to enhance reporting accuracy and public discourse.
