Speaker Bagbin disputes President Mahama's nomination of James Agalga

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated James Agalga, the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, to serve as the Acting Majority Leader of Parliament. The nomination was presented to the House during an emergency sitting on August 24.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin characterized the President's direct nomination as an error, stating that the President does not have the authority to communicate changes in parliamentary leadership. Bagbin clarified that the Majority Leader is a member designated by the party caucus, with communication typically handled through the General Secretary.

As a result of this ruling, Bagbin directed that Agalga will serve in an acting capacity, while the previous leader, Ayariga, will continue to occupy the seat until the party communicates a formal change and the caucus accepts it. The emergency session is also scheduled to address Supreme Court nominations, ministerial appointments, and the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Amendment Bill.
