Speaker Bagbin receives Democracy Cup trophy and unveils Sunderland partnership

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has officially received the 2026 Democracy Cup trophy. The trophy precedes a major football match between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, scheduled for August 28, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

During the presentation, Bagbin emphasized that the Democracy Cup serves as a platform for promoting Ghana’s democratic values, national unity, and social cohesion. He noted that the competition has gained international recognition, projecting the country’s democratic credentials globally.

Bagbin also announced a new partnership between Ghana and the English football club Sunderland. Under the ‘Visit Ghana’ initiative, the tourism campaign will be featured on Sunderland’s jersey during the 2026/27 season. The partnership aims to boost tourism and provide Ghanaian youth with opportunities to train at the Sunderland Academy, with potential pathways for players to join the professional team.
