Specialized medical team treats premature infant in Junín
Medical teams in Argentina successfully performed a complex surgery on a 980-gram premature infant at the Abraham Félix Piñeyro General Interzonal Hospital in Junín. The procedure addressed a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a condition where the connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta fails to close after birth.
To minimize the risks associated with transporting such a low-weight infant, a traveling cardiovascular surgery team from the Sor María Ludovica Hospital in La Plata traveled to Junín to perform the operation. Following the intervention, the infant showed significant progress, increasing in weight to 2.49 kilograms, and has since returned to Lincoln for continued recovery.
This initiative is part of a strategy by the Ministry of Health of the Province of Buenos Aires to strengthen the provincial hospital network by bringing specialized technology and high-complexity medical teams directly to various regions, reducing the need for high-risk patient transfers.
