Neonatal emergency medical procedures

Overview

Medical staff at the Ospedale Maggiore in Parma successfully performed an emergency procedure to save a premature newborn weighing approximately one kilogram. The infant, born at 28 weeks of gestation, experienced a sudden clinical deterioration characterized by extreme bradycardia.

Neonatologist Antonio Di Peri identified a significant pericardial effusion via bedside ultrasound, which posed an immediate risk of cardiac tamponade. To relieve the pressure on the heart, the medical team performed a pericardiocentesis, aspirating approximately 10 milliliters of fluid from the pericardial cavity.
