Rome’s Spin Time Labs Eviction Leaves Hundreds Homeless
A fire broke out at the Spin Time Labs building in Rome’s Esquilino district on the night of 29‑30 July, after which the Ministry of the Interior ordered a judicial seizure of the property. The evacuation left more than 400 residents – including over 90 minors – on the streets for about 48 hours, many sleeping on inflatable mattresses and makeshift shelters.
The city administration, led by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Prefect Lamberto Giannini, held several meetings with community representatives, social‑service officials and the property owner. Rome’s social services and the Civil Protection department began monitoring the situation, providing emergency assistance such as 70 beds across three municipal facilities and distributing meals. Residents have set up a permanent protest outside the sealed building, while the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme opened its doors to shelter the most vulnerable.
The municipal council is considering the purchase of the building to restore housing for the displaced families. Ongoing discussions focus on improving sanitation, medical and psychological support, and securing a long‑term solution for the community that has become a cultural and social hub in the neighbourhood.
