Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria calls for better support and inclusion

Chapters of the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN) in Plateau and Kogi states have called for increased government investment, improved rehabilitation services, and greater social inclusion to mark World Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day. Under the theme ‘From Awareness to Action: Ten Years Advancing SCI Prevention’, advocates are pushing for practical measures to prevent injuries and support survivors.

In Plateau State, Chairperson Juliet Philip highlighted the challenges of widespread denial among families, which often delays essential medical care and rehabilitation. She emphasized that early acceptance of the condition is vital for survivors to rebuild their lives and achieve their potential.

In Kogi State, SCIAN representatives, including Chairperson Salawu Sefinat Ohunene and Financial Secretary Abu Ismaila, advocated for affordable healthcare, accessible public facilities, and equal employment opportunities in both public and private sectors. Members noted that survivors continue to struggle with social stigma and the high cost of medication, stressing the need for a more inclusive environment.
