Disability rights advocacy in Nigeria

Disability rights advocates in Nigeria are calling for increased government support, improved infrastructure, and better social inclusion for persons with disabilities.

At a national policy dialogue, officials emphasized the need for disability-inclusive psychosocial support and accessible humanitarian interventions, particularly for children affected by conflict and displacement. In the Federal Capital Territory, advocates urged the active implementation of the Inclusive Education Policy, noting that children with intellectual disabilities require adequate funding, teacher training, and accessible materials.

In Plateau and Kogi states, representatives from the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN) advocated for enhanced rehabilitation services and affordable healthcare. Advocates highlighted challenges such as social stigma, the high cost of medication, and family denial of injuries, which can delay essential medical care. They called for greater investment in accessible public facilities and equal employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors.
