Dutch and Belgian politicians increasingly use AI for speeches

An investigation by De Groene Amsterdammer and Investico reveals that at least 68 members of the Dutch House of Representatives use artificial intelligence to draft opening statements and debate contributions. The study, which analyzed transcripts from the first nine months of the year, found that AI-generated content appears in approximately two-thirds of all Dutch parliamentary debates.

Certain politicians were identified as frequent users. Esmah Lahlah, a former member of the PRO party and current Amsterdam alderman, used AI in 80 percent of her appearances. Other frequent users include Rachel van Meetelen (PVV), Fatimazhra Belhirch (D66), and Wendy van Eijk (VVD). Within political parties, the BBB leads with AI used in 30 percent of their speeches, followed by the VVD, Mona Keijzer, and Group Markuszower. Conversely, parties such as Volt, the SP, and the PvdD do not use the technology for this purpose.

The data suggests a correlation between AI usage and political inexperience, as half of the frequent users were elected within the last year. While some representatives claim the tools are used to condense arguments, others have expressed regret over their use.
