Spirit of Tasmania launches new ferry services and terminal
The new Spirit of Tasmania ferry services have commenced operations following years of delays and a $717 million cost increase. The two new vessels, Spirit of Tasmania IV and V, completed their maiden voyages across the Bass Strait on October 31, 2026.
These larger ferries offer increased capacity, capable of carrying 400 additional passengers and 60 percent more vehicles than previous models. Onboard amenities include upgraded cabins, a movie theatre, and a gaming zone. Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff stated the vessels represent a new chapter for the state, intended to support local businesses, freight operators, and tourism.
To support the larger ships, the Spirit Quay terminal in Devonport has officially opened. This purpose-built, seven-hectare facility is nearly twice the size of the previous operation and features a 740-tonne gantry and four steel ramps to manage the increased volume of passenger vehicles and freight.
