Spirit of Tasmania ferry service expansion
Overview
The Spirit of Tasmania has launched new ferry services and a dedicated terminal following significant delays and a $717 million cost increase. The two new vessels, Spirit of Tasmania IV and V, completed their maiden voyages across the Bass Strait between Geelong, Victoria, and Devonport, Tasmania.
The new ships provide increased capacity, carrying 1,800 passengers and 60 percent more vehicles than previous models. Onboard amenities have been expanded to include upgraded cabins, dining experiences centered on Tasmanian produce, a movie theatre, and a gaming zone.
To accommodate the larger vessels, the Spirit Quay terminal in Devonport has officially opened. This seven-hectare facility is nearly twice the size of the previous operation and includes a 740-tonne gantry and four steel ramps to manage increased passenger and freight volumes. Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff stated the project represents a “dawn of a new era” intended to support local businesses, freight operators, and tourism growth.
