Spirit of Tasmania launches two new ferries across Bass Strait

The Spirit of Tasmania IV and Spirit of Tasmania V have completed their maiden voyages between Geelong, Victoria, and Devonport, Tasmania. The new vessels represent a significant upgrade in capacity, capable of carrying 1,800 passengers and 60 percent more vehicles than previous ships.

Owned by the Tasmanian Government through the TT-Line Company, the ships feature 301 cabins, including family, deluxe, accessible, and pet-friendly options. Onboard amenities have been expanded to include new dining and lounge experiences centered on Tasmanian produce.

The project faced several challenges, including a $717 million cost blowout and delays from an original 2021 target service date. Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff described the launch as the “dawn of a new era” for Bass Strait travel, noting that the increased capacity is expected to support tourism growth across the state.
