Croatia names starting XI for World Cup showdown with England

Croatia’s coach has confirmed the expected starting lineup for the upcoming World Cup match against England. Goalkeeper Dominik Livaković, the three‑center‑back trio of Josip Šutalo, Luka Vušković and Joško Gvardiol, full‑backs Josip Stanišić and Ivan Perišić, and midfield core Luka Modrić, Mateo Kovačić and Ivan Perišić are slated to start. Mateo Kovačić is likely to partner Modrić in midfield, while Petar Sučić and Martin Baturina are projected on the flanks and Petar Musa is set to lead the attack.

Ahead of the tournament, FIFA introduced a new anthem protocol in which the full squad, including reserves, joins the national anthem on the pitch and the teams’ flags remain raised for the entire ceremony. Saudi Arabian law, which forbids its flag from touching the ground, led FIFA to keep the Uruguayan flag suspended in the air during the Uruguay‑Saudi Arabia match.

The World Cup has also sparked a competitive market for national team jerseys. Adidas, Nike and Puma dominate more than three‑quarters of the global football apparel market, while smaller brands vie for niche contracts. Croatia has switched from an American supplier to a Bavarian brand after 26 years.

Former Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitić told ESPN that the 2018 World Cup in Russia was the turning point for the nation’s football fortunes, emphasizing belief, preparation and the quality of the squad as key to past successes and as motivation for the upcoming group stage.
