Spoleto: Success for La cantatrice calva at Teatro Lirico Sperimentale
The production of ‘La cantatrice calva’ has achieved significant success at the 80th season of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale in Spoleto. The opera features music by Luciano Chailly based on the play by Eugène Ionesco, with an Italian translation by Gian Renzo Morteo.
Directed by Marco Angius and featuring staging, sets, and costumes by Pier Luigi Pizzi, the production utilizes the Orchestra Filarmonica Umbra ‘Vittorio Calamani’. The musical score, composed between 1980 and 1982, is described as a disciplined, abstract work that aligns with the surrealist and nonsense elements of the original text.
Chailly’s composition aims to provide a destabilizing counterpart to the bourgeois world, employing a dodecaphonic and serialist approach to surrealism that complements Ionesco’s anti-comedy.
