Sporting News publishes top 25 greatest baseball teams
To mark its 140th anniversary, Sporting News assembled a panel of baseball experts, including Hall‑of‑Fame broadcaster Bob Costas, to rank the 25 greatest teams in the sport’s history dating back to 1886. The list incorporates the newly added Negro Leagues statistics, with two Negro Leagues clubs making the cut alongside 45 modern‑era teams. The franchise with the most World Series titles appears prominently, while the 1906 Chicago Cubs are the only top‑25 team that never won a World Series.
Among the entries, three Boston Red Sox squads are highlighted: the 2018 club (108‑54, World Series champions), the 2004 team that broke the "Curse of the Bambino," and the 1912 squad that posted a 105‑47‑2 record and won the World Series in Fenway Park’s inaugural season.
