Spreča River water analysis reveals poor conditions after fish kill

Water quality analysis results have been released following a reported fish kill in the Spreča River near Gračanica. The Agency for the Water Area of the Sava River conducted sampling on September 1, 2026, at two locations: the Karanovački bridge in Gračanica, where the fish kill occurred, and the Porječina bridge in Lukavac, which served as an upstream reference point.

Testing at the Karanovački bridge revealed extremely unfavorable conditions, including a dissolved oxygen concentration of only 0.29 mg O₂/L and a water temperature of 27.8 °C. Researchers also found levels of BOD₅, ammonium, and total nitrogen exceeding prescribed limits. Additionally, dissolved manganese levels were significantly elevated at 3.58 mg/L compared to 0.33 mg/L at the upstream location. The combination of low oxygen, high temperatures, increased organic and nutrient loads, and poor hydrological conditions created a highly unfavorable environment.
