Overview
Mass fish kills have been reported in the Sava River basin, specifically affecting the Sava and Spreča rivers.
In the Sava River, official analyses linked the mortality to wastewater discharges from treatment plants in Zagreb and Velika Gorica. The State Inspectorate found pollutant concentrations exceeding legal limits, though the Josip Juraj Strossmayer Water Institute noted that high water temperatures and low dissolved oxygen levels also contributed. These findings contradicted earlier claims by Zagrebački holding that its operations were within prescribed values.
In the Spreča River near Gračanica, water quality testing revealed extremely unfavorable conditions at the site of the fish kill. Researchers recorded dissolved oxygen levels of only 0.29 mg O₂/L, high water temperatures, and elevated levels of BOD₅, ammonium, total nitrogen, and manganese compared to upstream reference points.
