Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy Resonance for Switch

Square Enix unveiled a new entry in the Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy Resonance, during the latest Nintendo Direct. It is the first main‑series title to use the HD‑2D visual style, combining pixel‑art aesthetics with 3D models, and will launch on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on 22 October 2026.

The game promises classic turn‑based combat, iconic series elements such as airships, crystals and moogles, and a cast of “Visions” that echo beloved characters. The announcement follows Square Enix’s recent attempts to revitalize its brand after a series of short‑lived live‑service projects, suggesting a strategic shift toward more regular, lower‑budget titles that can be released more frequently.

The reveal includes a gameplay trailer that showcases dynamic camera angles, strategic battle mechanics that reward exploiting enemy weaknesses, and extensive side‑content such as coliseums, hidden bosses and weapon chambers.
