Square Enix sets FF Resonance date, Octopath ports
Overview
Square Enix’s July 16 trailer introduced Final Fantasy Resonance as the franchise’s first HD‑2D title, showcasing pixel‑art characters on 3‑D backdrops, turn‑based combat, Chocobo travel, airships, large bosses and systems such as Visions, weapon crafting, the Colosseum and a Chamber of Arms. Platform coverage was announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, PC and legacy consoles (PS4, Xbox One). A second trailer on July 18 reaffirmed the visual style and the 22 October 2026 worldwide launch date.
Later that day Square Enix formally set the release date and opened digital pre‑orders for Standard and Deluxe editions on the Nintendo eShop. The announcement added new locations—industrial city Dilmagia and water‑rich capital Olderion—and introduced characters Lid, Mechabo and strategist Nichol. The Visions system now summons iconic heroes such as Cloud, Tidus, Cecil, Bartz, Squall and Zidane, while a dedicated “Resonance” attack triggers when all enemies fall in a single turn. Expected playtime is 30‑40 hours for the main story, extending to 60‑80 hours for full completion. Parallel Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II ports for Switch 2 remain on track for a 1 October 2026 launch, with pre‑orders opened on 13 July 2026 and a limited‑edition Primrose figurine slated for May 2027.
Following the game's announcement, Square Enix indicated to shareholders that the positive response to Resonance might lead to further classic-style remakes, though they emphasized a preference for evaluating such projects individually rather than following a single formula. In August, the company released a new trailer titled "Vision – Warrior of Light," highlighting the character's combat abilities and the player's ability to summon him within the Sanctum of Light.
