Square Enix reveals details for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World

Square Enix has released new details regarding Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, which is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on December 3, 2026. The game follows protagonists Bianca and Nera as they attempt to save the Kingdom of Witherwood from darkness caused by meteocite crystals, which drain the land of its energy.

Key gameplay mechanics include a signature synthesis system that allows players to combine monsters to create new companions. Exploration is facilitated by the Waterwing Can, an artifact used to revive withered Roots of Creation and Parched Lifebuds. Restored roots serve as Zoom destinations, facilitate monster healing, and enable monster synthesis.

The supporting cast includes King Withers, a monarch who assists the protagonists; Ed, a self-proclaimed monster wrangling legend; and Thespidor, a character known as the “showrunner of the darkness below” who created the meteocite crystals.
