Square Enix unveils Final Fantasy Resonance for Switch, debuting HD-2D graphics

Square Enix announced the upcoming title Final Fantasy Resonance during a Nintendo Direct presentation. The game will be the first entry in the long‑running series to use the HD‑2D visual style, blending pixel‑art aesthetics with 3D models and cinematic camera work. It will launch on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on 22 October 2026 and features a turn‑based battle system, new overworld, airships, chocobos, and more than thirty original musical tracks.

Resonance reimagines the storyline of the mobile title Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, expanding it with original characters, new plot elements and cameo appearances from series icons such as Warrior of Light, Terra, Cloud, Zidane, Shantotto and Y’shtola. The game will also introduce a “cinematic pixel” technique for its intro and showcase espers and Visions that aid players in combat.
