Squishy toys trigger global safety warnings over burns and toxins
Authorities in several countries are issuing warnings regarding popular squishy toys, specifically models known as ‘Squishy Dumplings,’ due to significant safety risks.
In Brazil, reports have emerged of children suffering burns after attempting to soften the toys in a microwave, a practice reportedly suggested by some vendors. In addition to burn risks, Inmetro advises consumers to check for certification seals to avoid unregulated products.
In Europe, the Safety Gate rapid alert system has flagged multiple products—including names such as ‘Steamed Bun,’ ‘Squishy Fidget Fun,’ and ‘Happy Buns’—for choking hazards caused by small parts that can detach. Consumer advocates in the United Kingdom also identified high concentrations of benzene, a known carcinogen, in certain models.
Further concerns raised by Stiftung Warentest and other agencies include the presence of hazardous internal fillings. These may include water beads that pose an intestinal obstruction risk if swallowed, as well as potential asbestos contamination in sand-filled versions.
