Squishy Dumplings toys recalled over benzene contamination

UK Trading Standards and local councils have issued an urgent recall of "Squishy Dumplings" toys after tests revealed excessive benzene levels in the outer layer of the products sold by Samsons Cash and Carry. The chemical, classified as carcinogenic, poses a serious health risk, especially to children, prompting officials to advise parents to discard any toys that emit a strong chemical smell or lack proper CE or UKCA safety markings.

The recall follows similar actions in other regions. In China, the toys' manufacturer is under investigation, and Health Canada has been contacted by concerned consumers. A Canadian father who independently measured volatile organic compounds reported VOC readings up to 9.999 mg/m³, far above typical indoor levels. Northumberland County Councillor Gordon Stewart emphasized the need for vigilance and urged retailers to remove suspicious items from shelves.

Authorities also warned against a viral social‑media trend of heating the toys in microwaves, which can cause burns and injuries. Consumers are advised to check packaging for importer and safety information and to contact trading standards if they possess the recalled items.
