Squishy toys pose health risks due to potential benzene exposure

Popular soft toys known as 'squishies' are raising health concerns after reports of chemical exposure and physical risks. In Argentina, authorities banned certain models after testing revealed benzene concentrations up to four times the permitted limit. Benzene is a proven carcinogen linked to leukemia.

In Brazil, Inmetro has issued alerts regarding these toys, particularly concerning social media trends that encourage children to microwave, cut, or puncture them. Such actions can cause burns, choking hazards, or the release of hazardous internal materials. Pediatric experts have noted cases of allergic reactions and skin irritation following contact with the material inside ruptured toys.

To ensure safety, authorities recommend purchasing toys with the Inmetro seal, clear manufacturer identification, and appropriate age ratings, while avoiding unbranded or smuggled products.
