Srebarna Reservoir water level held steady despite critically low Danube

The water level in Bulgaria’s Srebarna Reservoir is being kept stable even as the Danube River reaches critically low levels of minus 88 cm. The Regional Environmental Inspection in Ruse reported that water is being diverted from the Western Canal into the “Dragana’s Pond” water sight, then pumped into the central reservoir using two hydro‑pump units from the Main Directorate of Fire Safety. Over 1 million m³ of water has already been added.

Because the sand‑laden channel connecting the island of Devnya to the reservoir’s shore continually clogs the pumps, workers are excavating sand channels and extending polyethylene pipelines installed by the Ruse water utility to bring water closer to the pump intakes. The ongoing operation also supplies fresh water and abundant fish material, supporting large numbers of waterbirds such as swans, geese, herons, ibises and pelicans that are now present in the reservoir and along the Danube shore.
