Srebrenica genocide 31st anniversary marked amid divided Balkan media coverage

The United Kingdom addressed the OSCE on 11 July, marking the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide in which more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed and over 20,000 people displaced. The UK reaffirmed its support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s stability, sovereignty and reconciliation, linking the remembrance to the broader need to prevent atrocities such as Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Media reporting of the commemoration revealed starkly different narratives across the country. In the Bosniak‑ and Croat‑majority Federation entity, coverage was extensive and used the term “genocide.” In the Serb‑dominated Republika Srpska, reports were sparse and avoided the word “genocide,” referring instead to “crime” or “suffering,” underscoring persistent divisions in the Balkans.
