Srebrenica public gatherings banned by Republika Srpska authorities
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska (MUP RS) has banned all public gatherings in Srebrenica scheduled for September 2, citing security concerns and the need to prevent disturbances to public order.
The ban affects two planned events: a gathering intended to honor the late Ratko Mladić, a former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska convicted of genocide and war crimes, and a peaceful assembly organized by survivor associations to protest the glorification of war criminals.
The Srebrenica Memorial Center has formally requested information from the Srebrenica Police Station regarding the legality and organization of the Mladić gathering. The Center is seeking details on the formal organizer, whether the event was properly reported, and if a security risk assessment was conducted. They also inquired whether authorities considered potential criminal or misdemeanor responsibilities regarding the content of the gathering, specifically concerning the incitement of hatred.
Following the ban, Alija Tabaković, a delegate in the Council of Peoples of Republika Srpska, confirmed that survivor associations, including Mothers of Srebrenica, have withdrawn their planned peaceful protest after receiving assurances that the pro-Mladić gathering would not take place.
