Balkan region manages multiple wildfires and environmental concerns
Multiple wildfire incidents are affecting the Balkan region. In Serbia, authorities have localized a major fire on Suva planina after 22 days of intense fighting. The operation involved approximately 950 personnel, 468 vehicles, and aerial support from helicopters and an Ilyushin aircraft. No casualties were reported during the intervention.
In Croatia, firefighters are managing several fronts. A fire in Srinjine near Split burned roughly four hectares of vegetation, requiring 61 firefighters. On the island of Brač, a massive wildfire previously burned an estimated 5,000 hectares, and while the immediate threat to settlements was mitigated, recovery efforts continue. Additionally, political debate has emerged in Rijeka regarding waste management oversight following a fire at a recycling center in Kukuljanov.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, rainfall has aided efforts to extinguish a long-running fire on Čvrsnica mountain, which had been active for over two weeks in difficult terrain. Meanwhile, in Montenegro, the Podgorica fire service reported a highly organized season despite facing over 1,000 individual fire incidents.
In Serbia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has denied social media reports of pollution in the Veliki Rzav river, asserting that inspections confirmed the water remains clear following recent concerns near the Svračkovo dam.
