SRFTI campus in Kolkata sees violent clashes between students and ABGP

Violent clashes erupted at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata on Sunday between students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), an RSS-affiliated organization. The confrontation began when students questioned why a political group was permitted to hold an event in the institute’s main auditorium.

The dispute escalated into physical violence, leaving several students, ABGP members, and faculty members injured. Students alleged that outsiders entered the campus to assault them, while ABGP members accused students of vandalizing their event, tearing down banners, and desecrating images of Swami Vivekananda and Bharat Mata.

Police have registered three separate FIRs at the Panchasayar police station: one by ABGP members, one by a group of students, and a suo motu case by the police. A heavy security presence remains at the campus to maintain order following the unrest. The incident has drawn condemnation from various members of the film fraternity and calls for investigation from government officials.
