Violence at Indian film and television institutes
Overview
Violence has erupted at film and television institutes in India, leading to injuries and academic disruptions.
In Itanagar, students at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) suspended all classes indefinitely following an assault on September 16. During the incident, local youths allegedly attacked students and a security guard. Dominic Sangma, the head of the institute’s Screenwriting Department, was reportedly assaulted with bamboo sticks while attempting to intervene. Students have since demanded increased security, including the deployment of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.
In Kolkata, violent clashes occurred at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) on September 27 between students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), an organization affiliated with the RSS. The confrontation began when students questioned why a political group was permitted to hold an event in the institute’s main auditorium. The dispute escalated into physical violence, leaving students, faculty, and ABGP members injured. Students alleged that outsiders entered the campus to assault them, while ABGP members accused students of vandalizing their event and desecrating religious images.
As of October 10, the SRFTI student boycott has extended to 11 days. The unrest intensified on October 4 when members of the Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Mancha allegedly attempted to breach the institute's gates by throwing stones and bottles toward the campus. Student union spokesperson Sudip Chakraborty stated the boycott will continue until students are assured of campus security following these alleged attacks by right-wing forces. While a general body meeting is expected to determine future actions, some students have reportedly vacated hostels ahead of Durga Puja celebrations.
