Sri Lanka bans alcohol and drugs at school-related events

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Education has issued a sweeping prohibition on the promotion and consumption of alcohol, drugs, and other intoxicating substances at events that use school logos or represent educational institutions.

The decision follows numerous complaints from parents regarding students being exposed to drugs during major school cricket and rugby encounters, commonly known as ‘big matches’. Mahesh Ratnayake, Deputy Director of the Co-curricular, Guidance and Counselling Branch, stated that any event organized by affiliated groups, such as old boys’ associations, that utilizes a school logo will be treated as a school event and must remain substance-free.

Under Circular No. 2026/10, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education is empowered to immediately prohibit any event where these substances are used. Authorities intend to strictly monitor implementation to preserve the integrity of school sports and protect students from the normalization of substance use during high-profile sporting fixtures.
