Sri Lanka Customs exceeds monthly revenue target for eighth straight month

Sri Lanka Customs has exceeded its monthly revenue target for the eighth consecutive month in 2026. For August, the department collected approximately Rs. 199.6 billion by August 27, surpassing the monthly target of Rs. 190.3 billion.

In the first eight months of 2026, Customs has secured approximately Rs. 1.83 trillion, which represents roughly 83% of its annual target of Rs. 2.21 trillion. This performance comes despite an annual target that was set 13.5% lower than the previous year due to expected declines in motor vehicle imports.

Authorities attribute the increased revenue to several factors, including the easing of import restrictions following the 2022 economic crisis, stabilized reserves, and recovering consumer demand. Additionally, improved enforcement, better monitoring of undervaluation and misdeclarations, and enhanced digitalization and valuation practices have contributed to the gains. The institution remains a primary contributor to Treasury income, supporting the government's fiscal targets under an IMF-supported program.
