Sri Lanka Customs revenue performance

Overview

Sri Lanka Customs has exceeded its monthly revenue target for eight consecutive months in 2026. By August 27, the department collected approximately Rs. 199.6 billion, surpassing the monthly target of Rs. 190.3 billion.

For the first eight months of the year, cumulative collections reached roughly Rs. 1.83 trillion, or about 83% of the annual target of Rs. 2.21 trillion. This target was set 13.5% lower than the previous year to account for expected declines in motor vehicle imports.

Authorities attribute the revenue growth to the easing of import restrictions following the 2022 economic crisis, stabilized reserves, and recovering consumer demand. Gains have also been supported by improved enforcement, better monitoring of misdeclarations and undervaluation, and enhanced digitalization and valuation practices. The institution serves as a primary contributor to Treasury income under an IMF-supported program.
