Sri Lanka dengue outbreak claims lives as cases top 86,000

A pregnant woman and her unborn child have died from dengue fever, highlighting the severity of Sri Lanka's ongoing outbreak. Health officials warn that pregnant women are among the most vulnerable groups.

The National Dengue Control Unit reports 86,386 infections so far in 2026, with 62 dengue‑related deaths. July recorded the highest monthly surge with 29,978 cases, and the Western Province, especially Gampaha District, remains the epicentre, accounting for over half of all infections. Authorities have designated 137 Medical Officer of Health divisions as high‑risk areas and are intensifying mosquito‑control measures, urging the public to eliminate breeding sites and seek early medical care.
