Sri Lanka dengue outbreak surpasses 95,000 cases

Sri Lanka is facing a significant dengue fever outbreak, with the National Dengue Control Unit reporting 95,868 cases so far in 2026. The disease has resulted in 72 recorded deaths, maintaining a case fatality rate of 0.075%.

Data indicates that the Western Province has been most heavily impacted, accounting for over 52% of total cases. Within this province, the Gampaha and Colombo districts have reported the highest numbers, with 20,415 and 18,981 cases respectively. Other notable areas include Kandy and Kalutara. While monthly figures peaked in June and July, health officials warn that the threat persists despite a recent decline in reported cases.

Dr. Prashila Samaraweera of the National Dengue Unit has cautioned the public to remain vigilant, noting that increases in mosquito populations often precede spikes in patient numbers. Authorities have identified 50 high-risk areas and are urging residents to eliminate stagnant water and breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito to prevent further spread.
