Sri Lanka dengue outbreak tops 70,000 cases, hospitals under pressure

Sri Lanka's dengue epidemic has surged past 70,000 confirmed infections this year, with the death toll reaching 48‑49. The Western Province accounts for the largest share with over 38,000 cases, followed by the Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces. Districts such as Gampaha and Colombo report the highest numbers in July.

Health authorities have launched a week‑long mosquito‑control operation in 11 high‑risk districts and are urging residents to eliminate breeding sites, use repellents and seek early treatment. Hospitals across the island report wards filled with dengue patients, stretching staff and resources.
