Sri Lanka expands aviation sector through new airline bids and training partnerships
Sri Lanka's aviation sector is experiencing growth through both new market entries and enhanced training capabilities. Three startup airlines have formally submitted launch applications to the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL). These applications, which include details on intended routes, fleet configurations, and business models, are currently under regulatory review. The interest follows a rebound in tourism and a post-pandemic economic recovery.
Simultaneously, SriLankan Airlines has strengthened its role as a regional training hub. The airline recently completed a specialized Airbus A330 flight training programme for six senior examiner pilots from Etihad Airways. The program, which included five Type Rating Examiners and one Senior Type Rating Examiner, utilized SriLankan Airlines' instructors and infrastructure to support the professional development of the visiting international crew.
