Sri Lanka launches electronic case filing at Colombo District Court

Sri Lanka has launched the first phase of its island-wide e-Courts Project, introducing an electronic case filing system at the Colombo District Court. The initiative, implemented under the Judicial Service Commission, began with small claims cases at the Colombo Small Claims Court.

Developed by Sri Lanka Telecom in collaboration with the Judicial Service Commission, the system allows attorneys-at-law registered with the Supreme Court to submit cases, pleadings, and supporting documents via individual user accounts on the Colombo District Court website. The service is available 24 hours a day, allowing for submissions outside of traditional court-office hours.

Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena inspected the new system, which aims to replace traditional paper-based processes with a digital framework. The project is expected to reduce the need for physical travel to court premises for filing, decrease paper consumption, and minimize administrative delays. The facility is intended to be expanded in stages to include other types of cases and courts throughout the country.
