Sri Lanka Police launch crackdown on drug and alcohol-impaired driving

Sri Lanka Police have launched an islandwide crackdown on reckless driving, specifically targeting motorists suspected of operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Deputy Inspector General of Police W. P. J. Senadeera stated that the initiative follows an assessment of fatal and serious daily road crashes, which identified drug and alcohol use, dangerous behavior, and driver fatigue as recurring factors.

Law enforcement is placing increased scrutiny on passenger buses, three-wheelers, and heavy vehicles, such as tipper trucks and lorries. Police have already arrested several bus drivers and conductors for drug use, leading to court appearances and license suspensions. To support these efforts, a large supply of breathalyzers has been distributed to police stations across the country.

Authorities are urging the public to assist by reporting dangerous driving—including speeding, racing, and ignoring traffic signals—via a dedicated WhatsApp hotline at 070 4755600. Citizens are encouraged to provide clear video evidence, such as dashcam or smartphone footage, that captures vehicle registration numbers and route details.
