Sri Lanka President Dissanayake Meets Tamil Party Leaders Over Community Issues

Leaders of six Tamil‑speaking political parties in Sri Lanka – the All Ceylon Makkal Congress, Ceylon Workers’ Congress, Democratic Tamil National Alliance, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Tamil Progressive Alliance – formally requested a meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The representatives gathered at the Parliament Complex, affirmed their intent to work collectively while retaining separate identities, and subsequently submitted a letter asking the president to discuss a range of community concerns. Their agenda includes land‑rights and the return of military‑held property in the north and east, deeper devolution of power, accountability and transitional‑justice mechanisms, economic development and livelihood opportunities, and the release of long‑held political detainees. The parties also plan to meet the opposition leader and diplomatic representatives to broaden consensus. President Dissanayake, elected on a platform of systemic change and inclusive governance, has pledged to address minority grievances, making the requested dialogue an early test of his administration’s approach to post‑war reconciliation.

The outreach reflects a unified push by Tamil‑speaking formations to engage directly with the highest office on issues they view as critical to the well‑being and rights of their communities.
